• “By” y su relación con el tiempo

Se utiliza “by” cuando se quiere expresar que algo sucederá no más tarde de un momento indicado.

Ejemplo: “I’ll arrive home by midday” (Llegaré a casa a mediodía). En este caso es sinónimo de “around” o de “about”.

Ejemplo: “I’ll need to know English by the end of the semester” (Necesito saber inglés al terminar el semestre / hacia el final del semestre)

En castellano se puede traducir por a, hacia, sobre o aproximadamente y sus sinónimos.

• “By” y su relación con el lugar

- Se utiliza “by” para expresar movimiento o cercanía a un lugar.

Ejemplo: “I see him by the hospital everyday” (Le veo cerca del hospital cada día).

• “By” y su relación con el modo

- Para responder a la pregunta ¿cómo? se utiliza “by” en numerosas ocasiones. Por ejemplo, con los transportes.

Ejemplo: “He often travel by train” (Viaja a menudo en tren).

Ejemplo: “I’m sick by a virus” (Estoy enferma de un virus).

- En este contexto, se puede utilizar también para introducir una oración subjuntiva con gerundio. Sigue respondiendo a la pregunta ¿cómo? y en castellano se traduciría también por gerundio.

Ejemplo: “I fixed the lamp by conecting a new transistor” (Arreglé la lámpara conectándole un nuevo transistor).

• Expresiones idiomáticas comunes que usan la preposición “by”:

1. “By the way” -  por cierto

Ejemplo: “By the way, are you coming today?” (Por cierto, ¿vas a venir hoy?)

2. “By sight” -  de vista

Ejemplo: “I know your boss by sight” (Conozco a tu jefe de vista).

3. “By onself” – solo, sin ayuda

Ejemplo: “He painted the living room by himself” (Pintó el salón el solo).

4. “By far” – por mucho, de lejos

Ejemplo: “She winned the competition by far” (Ella ganó la competición por mucho).

5. “Step by step” -  paso a paso

Ejemplo: “We will solve the problem step by step” (Resolveremos el problema paso a paso).

6. “Little by little” – poco a poco

Ejemplo: “It’s slow, I’m passing my exams little by little” (Va despacio, voy aprobando los exámenes poco a poco).

by (bái) - para, antes de

• They will be here by five o'clock PM. Ellos estarán aquí para las cinco de la tarde.
• The letter will be delivered by Friday. La carta será entregada antes del viernes.
• Try to be there by Thursday. Trata de estar allí para el jueves
• 
  
• Si se hace referencia únicamente al medio de transporte utilizado y no a un vehículo concreto se utiliza la preposición "by":

• To go by car/ train/plane/ship/bus/motorbike/bicycle
