ARTICLES

INDEFINITE ARTICLE
  • Use "an" before words starting with vowels or (vowel sounds)
          He lives in an old house
          She has an orange bag
          The play lastas an hour (silent "h")
  • Use "a" before words that start with a vowel bust have a consonant sound.
          Is there a university in this town?
          They are a united family
          Spain is a European country
  •  Use "a" when you talk about something for the first time.
           I walked down Smith Street where I saw a man repairing
           a bicycle
  • Use "a" when you talk about individual profession (a teacher..)

DEFINITE ARTICLE
  • Use "the" when you talk about things again. It isn't the first time
          The man was old and the bicycle was in terrible condition
  • Use "the" when you talk about specific things.
          The children are playing in the garden, John
          Shops open for six hours on Sundays in England.
          Mom, the cheese is in the fridge
          The school is near the hospital (particular places)
  • Use "the" when you talk about mountain ranges (in The Sierra Espuña), groups of islands, rivers (The Thames), seas, oceans, names of hotels, types of shops ( the chemist, the bookshop..), cinemas, theatres and museums, points of the compass, superlatives, musical instruments, whole families (The Browns) and positions (in the middle, at the top..), with adjecives to describe groups of people (the poor, the blind, the young..), and whe you talk about  (the doctor, the architect..)
WE NOT USE ARTICLES WITH:

 The time, days of the week or month of the year or years.
         He comes here in August
         She arrives at six o'clock

Names of streets, airports, single mountains, stations, languages, cities, countries or meals
         London is the capital of England
         Grand Station is in Walter Street
         Barajas Airport isn't near Mount Everest.

Professions-areas of study or work..medicine, teaching, architecture
Titles + names
Names of shops...... Mercadona (not The Mercadona)
People's names (singular)... Susan (not The Susan)
After's (possessive).......... His brother's car was parked outside Mercadona in 2007
Uncountable nouns........ Food.....in general
Some fixed expressions........ by car, on foot, on holiday, at school, at home, in prison, in hospital, in bed, go to church, go to work
